Ep. 315 Biodynamics & Regeneration with Darek Trowbridge

A true expression of the land... Pastoral Winemaker, Darek Trowbridge celebrates the diversity in the vineyard, creating wines that are well balanced, provocative and true to the grapes.  Nothing is added to the wine except a minimal amount of protective sulfur.

In 2012 Darek started making a Regenerative Composted Mulch for use in his Biodynamic and Regenerative farming and to help revive 120 year old vines that his great Grandfather once tended. From that success he has brought this material to 6 other ranches that are now farmed by Darek regeneratively. In addition, Darek grows food crops and eggs on a small market garden using the Regenerative Composted Mulch. This has provided sustenance for many customers, friends and family and acts like a demonstration project for visitors to see how to grow crops without (soil organic matter destroying) tillage using Darek’s soil amendment.

And whether it’s wine grapes or zucchini Darek is always sequestering carbon into the soil without subsequent loss back into the atmosphere via tillage.

As one of the leaders in the field of “Natural Wines” Darek Trowbridge uses century old techniques to produce chemical free wines that become a singular expression of the winemaker, the grapes and the land.

Darek has been making biodynamic wines at Old World Winery for 20 years.  His passion is inviting nature into his winemaking using 120 year old field blends and rare varietals.  Using only the grapes and the naturally occurring native yeast to create wines, Darek knows his wines become the true expression of the natural beauty that exists in the vineyard.

Ep. 312 ReFi a conversation with Helena Merk | Spirals Protocol

Todays guest is Helena Merk current founder of Spirals Protocol. Their mission is to be bringing externalities into the economic model by building regenerative infrastructures for the new economy.

Helena recently had a successful exit with her last company called: Glimpse, literally Building belonging! Started with college campuses that went virtual during the covid 19 pandemic, and shifted to remote teams. Acquired by a direct competitor that shared their mission and vision to build a more authentically connected world.

Her most recent update is a collaboration between Eco Labs and Spirals Protocol. The Eco Labs mission is to unlock the ability to issue ecological assets at small scales, creating a new career path: Regeneration as an occupation. They’re doing this by focusing on practice-based methodologies for environmental stewardship. Leveraging emerging innovations in dMRV (decentralized + digital measuring, reporting, and verification) to record Proof-of-Impact in a low cost and accessible way.

Together, Eco Labs and Spirals build a positive climate impact flywheel 🤸🏽Collaboration roadmap:

  1. Eco Labs stakes with Spirals through $cUSD staking

  2. Eco Labs’ practice-based environmental credits are added for review to the climate council

  3. If approved, Eco Labs will immediately be eligible for funding!

Why Eco Labs?

To scale any climate solution, we need to scale remote monitoring and verification. The Impact App by the Eco Labs team does exactly this by:

  1. on-boarding Regenerators into dMRV ecosystems, and

  2. providing simple dMRV data capture via images & location verification via their mobile app.

The team behind Eco Labs is stellar: watching their progress in just the last few weeks in ReFi DAO founder circles, has been exciting.

Ep. 305 Documentary Filmmaker of COEXTINCTION Gloria Pancrazi

Todays guest is GLORIA PANCRAZI one of the directors of the award winning documentary Coextinction. The movie is set to release this year in 2022 and is a MUST WATCH for everyone who loves the Orcas and the bioregion of the Pacific Northwest. The documentary movie Coextinction 94 min. long from Coexistence Films covers the story of a mother orca who carried her dead calf for 17 days, as well as the collapse of the ecosystem, injustices against Indigenous people and environmental threats.

COEXTINCTION is a very personal story for Gloria. She grew up fascinated with orcas, watching every documentary, reading every book, and learning everything she could about this animal. When Gloria was 10 years old, she saw orcas for the first time off the coast of British Columbia. "It was clear then that I would spend my life working with them."

Her early career was focused on how to help them in captivity, but she never would have imagined they'd be threatened in the wild as well. In 2017, upon learning the remaining 78 Southern Resident orcas were on the verge of extinction, she moved to a small island in the Salish Sea to monitor them, spending countless hours on the water studying their behavioral patterns. She has witnessed first hand how dire the situation was.

"Through COEXTINCTION, I want people to learn from these orcas. They are incredibly emotionally intelligent beings who celebrate and grieve together. They have no home — they are each other's home. They work together through adversity and have learned how to coexist. They embody the interconnectedness we need to understand, and are intimately connected to the Indigenous communities we need to listen to."

Ep. 302 RASA Foods with Co-Founder and Chief Herbalist Ben LeVine

Todays guest is the co-founder and chief herbalist of RASA FOODS: Ben LeVine

Ben's story takes us into the topic plants, herbs and allyship with plants just as much as how to grow a strong business with regenerative impact and footprint in the real world.

About Ben:

Sitting quietly atop a Colorado mountain peak, Ben LeVine felt a voice from his favorite herb that would define his future: “You were meant to become an herbalist. Just let the plants guide you.” That path has led him to the farthest corners of the Earth and back, driven to unravel the mysteries of the world’s most powerful plants.

Now as Co-Founder and Chief Herbalist of Rasa, he’s using those potent herbal secrets to revolutionize your morning energy ritual with the power of adaptogens. From his earliest memories of exploring his family’s orchard with wonder, Ben has felt a profound connection with plants and nature. As a young man he followed this passion across the globe, working on farms from India to Alaska and learning traditional plant ceremonies from Ethiopia to Ecuador. Driven by a scientific mind that hungered for data as much as it reveled in tradition, he earned his MSc in Clinical Herbalism with a focus on adaptogens, and accepted a position at herbal tea juggernaut Celestial Seasonings.

As Senior Buyer of Botanicals, Ben was charged with sourcing and purchasing over 10 million pounds of herbs each year. Unfortunately, the more he learned about the inner workings of the commercial herb industry, the more jaded he became. He watched as the world’s precious botanical resources were ravaged by uncontrolled harvesting and over-exploitation. Even worse — he was part of the problem.

So once again, Ben followed the call of the plants. Leaving his corporate job behind, he joined the nascent Rasa team as Employee #2 to steward the development of its ethically sourced, adaptogen-infused herbal coffee alternative as their Co-Founder and Chief Herbalist, and formulator of all their blends. Built on a foundation of plant stewardship and radical sustainability, they’ve helped over 100,000 people and counting reconnect with mother nature, live their values, and discover boundless, plant-powered energy.
